Chapter Books for 8-Year-Olds

I'm so excited to be writing this post because I really, really love children's books.  Lucky for me, my kids do too.  Particularly when it comes to chapter books for my 8-year-old, Eleanor, I'm always scouring the internet for suggestions and recommendations.  I love to see what other people are reading to their kids and what their kids are reading.

For this post I asked Eleanor to pick out a few of her favorite chapter books.  Here's what she came up with:

This list would not be complete without Harry Potter.  I'm a huge Harry Potter fan.  Huge.  The books are total comfort reads for me and I reread them every few years.  In my eagerness to pass my love of Harry Potter on to my children, I made the mistake of introducing Harry Potter a little too early and Eleanor was just not ready.  This past March, however, I gave her the first book again and - total magic.  She absolutely loved it and finished the first four books in record time.  We started a fun tradition of staying up late on the Saturday night after she finished a book to watch the corresponding movie - this created such meaningful memories for me and I hope for her too.  Because she's only eight, I cut her off at book 4.  I'm not sure when I'll let her read books 5-7 (suggestions on that are welcome) but I know that she's not ready for them right now.

These graphic novels are super well loved in our house.  Bonus for me - they're like a modern take on Calvin & Hobbes, which I loved as a kid.  I think there are 11 or 12 books (I should check with Eleanor as I write this because she would know) in total.  Eleanor has read all of them and she tells me that her favorite one is The Magic Storm.  We were lucky enough to meet the author, Dana Simpson, earlier this year and she was wonderful and so supportive of her young fans' dreams to follow in her footsteps.

I took a picture of The BFG but all of Roald Dahl's books are gold and should be on this list.  We're huge fans of all the classics - The BFG, Matilda, James and the Giant Peach, The Witches, etc.  I bought a box set of Roald Dahl books a few years ago and Eleanor eagerly read them all and then some.  She says her two favorite books are Matilda and The BFG.

I think there are three books in this series (maybe more?) and they're all awesome.  They're funny and clever and just plain fun to read.

This is another series that Eleanor really enjoyed.  Her favorite of the series was The Best Christmas Pageant Ever but she thought all three were great.

When I asked Eleanor to give me her favorite chapter books this one was a little bit of a surprise to me.  This is the book she read most recently so I think that contributed to it making the list.  However, as evidenced by this list, Eleanor loves books about siblings and friends that get into mischief, which this book is all about.  Also, bonus, in writing this post I learned that there are actually four books in The Moffats series.  I love finding good book series' for my kids to get into.

So that's it - for now.  What are your kids reading?  What are your favorite chapter books for the 2nd-4th grade set?
